The key to their punchy tone is the use of Neodymium magnets; higher output means a more aggressive sound. Using the 4-position Quad-tone pickup selector, you can choose to operate the bridge pickup in parallel, the bridge and middle pickups in series, the neck and bridge pickups in parallel or the neck pickup in series.
