DESCRIPTION

Several years ago, after learning from Paul Reed Smith about his philosophy on acoustic building, we spec'd what we call a "study" guitar - an instrument that we deep-dive into the thought process behind the design of the instrument and study the execution of a build so that we can use it to influence our future designs. 

That instrument utilized an ebony back and sides combined with a cedar top in order to align with Paul Smith's philosophy: an acoustic guitar should operate like a speaker cone, with the back being "tight" and the top being "loose" in order to promote front-forward projection. We chose ebony for the back since its one of the most dense woods on the planet, but specifically used cedar on the top since the added warmth of cedar would counter the harshness that usually accompanies ebony. 

The result was absolutely spectacular - a guitar that had huge projection, strong bass, but even and clear across the whole instrument. It sold almost instantly. 

The Angelus Cutaway in this listing echoes many of the features of that previous "study" guitar, but with some unique appointments. Most excitingly is the simple and elegant purfling bird fretboard inlay which Ish Guitars and Private Stock Director Paul Miles designed together at the 2018 Woodstock Luthiers Invitational.
