1965 Gibson SG Standard Cherry Red
VINTAGE VERIFIED BY ISH GUITARS
Playability: Plays great with medium low action and minimal relief. Brand new 10-46 gauge strings. This would be referred to as a “fretless wonder” as the frets are low, but there is not too much wear on them as far as I can see (see pics). There is a small amount of buzz when plucking the high e string hard when open (nut is a tad low). This doesn’t seem to affect the playability enough to warrant replacing the original nut. As a note as well, we noticed a few tuner shafts were bent, this does not affect tuning stability in any way.
Authenticity: This guitar is all original with the possible exception of the output jack appears to have been replaced at one point or another. From what we can tell it appears the electronics and pickups have never been replaced or disconnected in any way from the original harness. Some tell-tale signs of authenticity include the pickup ring manufacturer numbers and machining marks, the pickup patent sticker, pickup machining marks, nitrocellulose under blacklight, neck profile, headstock shape, side dots as well as the hardware showing the proper foundry mark. This guitar is perfectly original with not a screw out of place, so far from what we can see…with the exception of the output jack appearing to perhaps been a replacement.
Repairs/Mods: The guitar does appear to have gone through a couple repairs. For one the strap button hole appears to have been doweled and filled, in 2 locations and moved to a 3rd location (see photos) where it is now stable, albeit not perfectly centered to the centerline of the guitar. Additionally, the guitar certainly had a neck pocket reglue at some point. Whether the neck broke and was repaired, or it needed a neck reset, it was reglued and touched up at some point in its life. The work that was done appears to be professionally done and is VERY stable, I am not concerned about the longevity of this repair in any way.
Lastly, it is missing the original trem arm for it, we do not have a replacement for it.
Cosmetic Condition: In addition to the blemishes caused by the previous repair work, there is lots of wear/scratches/dings/checking present all over the instrument. We think it all lends to the overall look of this guitar!
